Happy Mother's Day! A Throwback to our Mams on their Wedding Day

We're taking a walk down memory lane for Mother's Day...

Happy Mother's Day one and all!

If you're a mam, I hope you're getting spoiled rotten/left in peace today. And if you have a mam, I hope you're adorning her with flowers, cards and a fancy lunch somewhere nice, for the day that's in it!

We thought we'd celebrate Mother's Day here at One Fab Day, with a throwback dedicated to our own mams on their wedding days. Some of the team have shared their favourite snaps of their mam as a bride, and let's just say, our mothers brought their A-game it when it came to wedding day style! Big hats, beautiful dresses, and a veil that would rival Kate Middleton's, get set for one fabulous line up of brides.

Tatum's Mam

As you can see, my Mam Helen is channeling Farrah Fawcett on her wedding day in 1976! Very few people could pull off this wedding dress with its dramatic tiered skirt, but my Mam has always been able to wear whatever she likes and make it look effortless. I love how she styled her bridal look down to the smallest details, even choosing red nail polish to match the roses in her bouquet. Of course, 42 years later, she's still putting us all to shame with her style!

Joanna's Mam

My mam, Jean, was obviously ahead of the trends with her carnationsflower crown and collared dress which she made herself! She was 23 when she married my dad and the whole day cost just Â£400 for 130 guests! I've always loved this picture, even more so now that she is no longer with us. What I love most is how happy she looks, and that you can see her engagement ring peaking through her bouquet which I now wear proudly with my own wedding ring. If you're lucky enough to still have your mam with you, give her an extra hug today. She's a very important lady!

Naoise's Mam

My Mum, Eavan, was just 21 when she married my father (who was 33!) She definitely went traditional and demure when it came to her bridal style. Mum’s not into fashion, she’s an old school romantic, so it was always going to be a long white gown and long veil (this was the era of Princess Di fever). When all the girls in the office saw my Mum’s wedding photos the first thing everyone remarked upon was her veil. In fairness, it is pretty epic. It’s a family heirloom-  handmade Carrickmacross lace that has to be handwashed in milk apparently. My poor Mum put her shoe through it on the morning of her wedding and it caused ructions. She was devastated and spent the morning crying in the bathroom. Hence my decision not to risk it for my wedding!

Celina's Mam

This is my Mam, Carmel, on the day she married my Dad, JJ, in 1971, with her sister and bridesmaid Bridget. My Mam is one of the most resourceful people on earth. These days she's teaching herself how to lay carpet and plumb washing machines, but back in 1971, she made her own wedding dress and veil, the bridesmaid's dress and the flower girl's dress in a flurry a week before the wedding. Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that she laid the bricks for the hotel where they had their reception. She's a DIY bride from before DIY brides were a thing, and she proves that a little creativity goes a long way in wedding planning!

Claire's Mam

This is my mam, Marian, with my dad Kevin on their wedding day in August 1976 ('the good summer' as it was known forever after). My mam wore a cream suit with a wide brimmed hat and a pink shirt - I remember seeing the photos when I was a kid and being really devastated that she wasn't wearing a dress. But now I can appreciate what a babe - and what a bad-ass! - she was on her wedding day.

What a bunch of beauties! We'd love to see your throwbacks too, so if you have photos of your mam on her wedding day, please do share them on our Facebook page or tag us in your pic on Instagram
