When Kaitlin spotted classmate Daniel across the school atrium, she whispered to the girl next to her, “I’m going to marry him some day.” 10 years and two separate engagements later, Kaitlin’s wish came true. Kaitlin and Daniel were surrounded by friends and family in Kaitlin’s parent’s backyard, by the lake she grew up on. They didn't want anything too formal, wanted a chilled atmosphere and lots of fun and that's just what they achieved. Agatha Rowland was on hand to capture all the romantic, vintage details that created a cozy, intimate setting for this wedding...
Including every member of their friends and family in the celebration was of highest importance, especially their three adorable boys - little Gage (above), Maxon and Liam, and enjoying the experience, rather than getting bogged down in details and stress so Kaitlin and Daniel took all the whole thing in their stride. Kaitlin had a final exam three days before the wedding so aside from the big ticket items (the photographer, tent and caterer being booked) a lot had to be left til the last minute..."The night before, and the morning of, was when we actually started setting up for the wedding. We truly did not stress about the details. Yes, it took some effort putting things together, and we definitely relied on our friends and family, but nothing seemed to be a daunting task and we just had fun with it all. I feel this is what helped all of us enjoy the day. Too many times I would hear people say they don’t remember their big day because they had planned so much and stressed about every detail. I didn’t want this for us. I didn’t want our day to be some big blur. We took it one step at a time and whatever happened, happened. We were getting hitched surrounded by our closest friends and family, what could be better?"
Intimate and relaxed with a vintage, romantic vibe was the look and feel Kaitlin and Daniel went for. They created this simply with soft lighting, warm-coloured flowers, hanging mirrors and a wedding guest list of only their very nearest and dearest. Kaitlin shares that they, “had old photos of our parents and grandparents’ weddings to honour them and to add to our theme.”
"Our wedding wasn’t very formal. We had guests arrive early to join myself, my husband and our wedding party in some lawn games, beverages and finger foods prior to all the wedding must haves (ceremony, speeches, reception etc). We wanted to mingle with our guests and help everyone feel comfortable to ensure they enjoyed their evening with us. We just wanted our guests to walk into the backyard and see romance, comfort, fun. We said 'be you, have fun, fall in love.' Oh, and the food … we are both foodies so it HAD to be tasty!"
We were curious about how these two met - Kaitlin remembers seeing Daniel in school…“It was in grade 11 when I met my husband, however we aren’t exactly high school sweethearts. We were from different crowds. We didn’t have our first interaction for quite some time (I was way too nervous). We simply passed in the hallways glancing at one another here and there. Eventually we were introduced, but of course I stumbled on every word possible. After high school we went our separate ways going off to school, working ... but every once and awhile we’d find ourselves back in our hometown over the holidays and such and run into each other at some holiday bash or birthday party...”
"... At one point we were both engaged to other people ready to settle down with whom we thought we were meant to be with. However, somewhere along the road reality set in and I ended my engagement. So did Dan, I later found out. Time passed, and one random evening at friends house, who shows up? Daniel! That evening as we were walking back inside the house, after the others, Dan reached for my hand and pulled me into him and kissed me. It was absolutely the best first kiss I could have imagined from the man I’ve wanted a kiss from for the last 10 years.”
Once they finally got together, Daniel proposed on New Year’s Eve surrounded by Kaitlin’s family. “We were sitting around playing games, when my mom announced the food was ready. Everyone ran to the kitchen, Daniel stayed put … this was VERY strange. This is when I thought something might be up, Dan never turns down food! After everyone was fed and relaxed Dan got down on one knee and proposed. It was perfect and so sweet. I could tell he was very nervous but I couldn’t have asked for anything better.”
So it is, that some years and three beautiful boys later, Kaitlin and Daniel tied the knot. It was important to make the occasion as personal as possible so Kaitlin shares some personalised touches that really made the day…“We asked my Dad and Uncle Danny to be our masters of ceremony. I needed and wanted them to be a big part of that day. It was very comforting for me to have these two men stand up for Dan and I. Also, my grandpa has passed and he and I were very close. I had his favorite shirt and army insignia wrapped around my bouquet.”
It looks like all a magical night...
A honeymoon is on the cards but nothing has been decided yet, Kaitlin says, "We are a busy family, and we haven't decided on whether or not to venture either coast of Canada or save up and take our kids to Hawaii or Costa Rica." No doubt it will be a fun adventure either way so enjoy guys!
