Today's real wedding comes with a bit of a health warning - there's a whole lotta gushing from me in this one. And I mean every word. It's rare for me to fall in love with a bride, but Debbie, well Debbie is different. If I were a betting woman, I'd put money on 90% falling in love with her too - she's a little polly pocket doll you just want to pick up and put on top of a wedding cake. And her wedding to Ciaran is a sigh-fest.
Beautifully photographed by Paula O'Hara, and featuring one of the most beautiful wedding gowns I have ever seen, it's very simple to describe Debbie & Ciaran's day - it's the definition of an elegant wedding. As Debbie herself said "There was no set theme really but I wanted it to be our day, not a cloned wedding day. We wanted it to say 'Debbie & Ciaran' and I hoped we achieved that. I didn’t want it to be “fashiony”, just simple and elegant." Elegant, that is the word...
So how did Debbie and Ciaran get together? "Ciaran and I met in the summer before we got together via very close friends; Charlene who was one of my bridesmaids, and Gareth her husband who was Ciaran's best man. He kept asking after me and they got sick of listening to him, so unbeknownst to me they organised evenings for me to be at their house for dinner, or a few drinks and he would be there too. Blind dates really do work!"
So this is The Dress. Don't worry this is just a sneak peek really - there's lots more of The Dress to see further along but you should know something about The Dress. It was made by Debbie's Mum. Yes, this beautiful creation is a one-off bespoke design handmade by her Mum. Do not die of jealousy girls...
So just before the ceremony starts, we need to know... how did Ciaran organise the big question? "He had bought me a diamond ring the first Christmas we were together, which replaced a ring I wore all the time on my ring finger on my right hand. We went on a holiday to Philadelphia the following summer and he had stole the old ring so he would know what size he needed. He got up on the morning he was for asking me and left early under the pretence that he had eaten too much and needed to walk it off. He came back with bagels and hummus for breakfast and told me to get ready and we would go out. He took me to the “Rocky Steps” outside Philadelphia's Art Museum and proposed with a gorgeous Tiffany diamond solitaire - how could I say no?!"
And now that Debbie and Ciaran are happily man and wife it's time to return to The Dress....
Also known as the Masterpiece "I always wanted lace, sleeves and duchess silk satin for the skirt. I knew the shape accentuated my tiny waist and skimmed over my full hips so it was a winner for me! I love a plain front with the detail on the back of any formal gown so that’s what Mum and I designed, a plain sweetheart bodice, but with a WOW shaped back. I wanted something different for the skirt too, I love the pleats and we designed the shaped back of the skirt with the small train so not to drown my 4 ft 11 frame! Mum stitched all the hems, edgings of the lace bodice and all the tiny pearls buttons on the back and that was all after she made me a proper victorian bodice, a masterpiece in itself with over 70 pieces in it! My mum is incredible!"
This is the lady responsible for The Masterpiece herself. We salute you Debbie's Mum! (and can you please, please make my wedding dress??)
She also made the bridesmaids dresses in keeping with Debbie's overall look for the day... "With elegance in mind we chose dark suits for the men and with Ciaran being so pale, the navy suit was perfect on him! And that’s how I came to settle on my girls colours. I loved the soft purpley-bluey-grey of the fabric and it was meant to go with the navy. Again I wanted to get away from the matchy matchy bridemaids look so I thought I would keep the navy theme with their shoes and accessories, I think it worked beautifully. Their dresses were to whisper Hollywood glam..."
When asked about favourite moments from the day, Debbie had an unusual but special choice..."Oh my goodness, its so hard to choose; probably when we were out in the gardens at Dunadry with Paula get our photos taken. The rain had stuck about so we were darting in and out of under brolly’s and trees to keep dry and the craic we all had was brilliant! I never have laughed as much in all my life, and that’s what I noticed in the photos - everyone having a ball!"
I think this is the first time a bride has ever told us that the photography session was one of her favourite times during the day. Just shows that if you have a great photographer with whom you feel at ease and trust, that you can really enjoy it as fun time together, rather than trying to escape off to join your guests (sure you're going to be with them until 4am at least!)
Dunadry was the chosen venue for the celebration because it perfectly met Ciaran & Debbie's lust for a venue with character and old world charm.
Now just wait til you see this wedding cake - it's not often I sigh over a cake but I adore lace pattern cakes and Debbie & Ciaran's just takes the biscuit (pardon the pun!) as this isn't any old lace design - the cake matches the lace on her wedding dress. I love this girl! And the wedding favours were hand made by Debbie herself - hand stamped, cut parchment with handmade scottish tablet of crumbly fudge inside, tied with a little 'love' ribbon.
But not to make it all too girly - she also organised for a Vivienne from A Slice of Cake in Cloughmills to make Ciaran "a surprise John Deere Tractor cake - it's his second love of his life ( I hope I'm the first!!!) He was blown away, he loved it!"
What advice would you give to brides and grooms planning their day? "Enjoy every minute of it, it really goes in a blink. It will be the best day of your lives so far but the most important thing is the love, laughter, family and friends that floats on the air!"
If you haven't quite gotten enough of Debbie and Ciaran's day then hop, quick smart!, over to Paula O'Hara's blog to see the rest. Seriously you will be swooning at your desk.
So you all know this is the bit where I say my thanks to the happy couple for sharing their day with us - well you know how I feel about Debbie and Ciaran, so nuff said really - I heart you guys!
And usually I have a big shout out to the super photographer responsible for the little bit of wedding magic we have had a glimpse at. But in this case, we are of course hugely grateful to Paula O'Hara, but I'm going to leave it to Debbie to tell you how she feels about her...
"I know you will give Paula O’Hara a big shout with this feature, but Ciaran and I are completely in love with her. I just love her natural style and eager eye, she did not miss a detail; not just the physical details, but even the way I always hold Ciaran's finger with my whole hand wrapped round it. When I saw it captured on the blog it actually took my breath away. Neither of us are big into getting our photos taken, but she made us feel so at ease whilst doing our engagement shoot on the ground where we are building our house. I was dreading the results, but I just loved them, when it came to the big day I hadn’t one fear when it came to what Paula would achieve for us."
So there you have it. See y'all over on Paulaohara.com round about 5 seconds from now...
